1950's fighter with thong clip

Part of the reason we enjoy eBay is seeing the oddballs.
Here's one for you, a 1950's fighter with a thong clip. Added on by the shop per request, or added by the owner?

No proof, but I tend to think that it was done outside the shop. A through hole would have been a much easier way for the shop (or anyone else for that matter) to allow for a lanyard carry, and it's not going to get flattened or broken off either.

My thoughts too. I saw that listing and did not even bother to inquire ( from Seller or Chat room members ) about that oddity .

I felt pretty sure it was not shop made like that. They ended the furnace link in 1944 and never went back to it . A drilled through hole would be easier to do and more durable. I have seen many WWII Randall knives with busted furnace links .

I assume that is the reason the shop ended the furnace link just before the end of WWII ?

Thanks guys. You never know though. It could have belonged to a soldier who was in the military, lost or broke his fighter, and just wanted Bo to put one on because he liked it that way. I'm sure those P clips we're still around in 1955.

I am certain in this case "never" is appropriate.

Particularly when the knife is at least a full decade later after the last regular use of the furnace link style disappeared and was supplanted as we all know with the thong hole.

There is always that one in a million chance I suppose, but if a thong was needed by the owner, I venture to say RMK would drill a hole in the butt. I would also venture to say that once RMK settled on an improved method of doing something, going "back" was not in the cards.

I would guess a previous owner wanted a thong and for lack of skill and/or risking hitting the tang, put the link on. Hey, but what do I know.
