Hidden tang mistake
I just purchased a Ranger Classic hidden tang knife kit from Knifekits.com. I was using the tang to tighten down the stacked washers and I messed up the threads. I tried to fix it but messed it all up. Now all I have left is epoxy and my handle seems to be holding together fine. I was wondering if I use epoxy to put the butt cap on the tang if it will work? The threads are toast so I think it will bond as long as the tang nut/screw is down far enough. What do you guys think?

From what you describe, I think it may be your only choice. You might want to use J&B WELD.

Do you have a friend that could tack weld a new threaded piece on for you? I know you can buy the little tiny allthread for it. Of course if your handle is already epoxied on I don't know if you can do that. I have zip experience, but I would say if you epoxy the butt on find a way to clamp it down tight against the handle. It might sink into the threads and hold pretty good. I'm not sure.

You say the threads are messed up - why don't you fix them? If the tang is still exposed the threads should be fixable either with some careful file work or with a die. If necessary, the exposed tang could be threaded for the next smaller size and then plug an re-tap the pommel or make a new pommel.
The glue would hold it together as long as nobody starts hammering with it but there are ways to fix it ... |
