Fired up my new gas forge and following the info you guys provided I welded up my first billet of cable damascus. I think it's welded up properly because when I cleaned it up, it looks like one piece of metal with no seams showing. It sounds solid when I whomp it on the anvil too.

It's going to be the guard on my father in law's birthday knife.

Sounds like you nailed it on the first time outta the chute! It's good to know that hanging around here has been helpful for you.............that's the reason I'm here.......so folks don't have to go through all the trial and error stuff that I did.
