1084, Ebony and Figured Mango
This is a knife that I forged back in May before I went to BCT. The blade was forged from 1/4" x 1" 1084 from Aldo Bruno. The bolster and butt are mild steel. The handle is figured mango on either side of Gaboon ebony. I've been waiting for something to use both of these woods on, and I think they work really well together. I soaked the entire handle in linseed oil for about 2 hours before I took this picture. It's been in there for an hour and a half since.
I plan on bringing this one to Bowie's. Better pictures below. Last edited by Bob Ouellette; 09-30-2007 at 10:37 AM. |

Thanks Ken. I finished the sheath yesterday. It's curly maple and an anonymus wood that a friend gave me. I used the center wedge to create the space for the handle to fit in side the sheath partially and to make it so I didn't have to carve the curly maple too much.

Very nicely done Bob. I especially like the lines on the sheath.

Very cool, knife, Bob! That sheath shows some woodworking skill and an artist's eye.

Thanks guys, I'm going to try to do more sheaths like this one. The central piece is the key to making it workable. I'm going to try to put a tutorial together in the near future.

I also love the sheath along wiht the combination of woods on the handle. What glue did you use for the sheath and are the layers pinned internaly?????

The outter two layers were glued using titebond 2 I think... it was a scrap from one of the guitars that my brother made. It came off the underside of the neck. I used Titebond 3 to put the two pieces of laminated curly maple to the center piece. Nothing is pinned, only glued. Oddly enough, I didn't use any glue for the handle :P
