1080 Ball pien
This is my latest hammer (14 oz) I turned from some 1080. I wanted the ball to have a less pronounced convex dome then regular ball piens have. The handle is turned from teak and is finished with a 1:1 mixture of tung oil and mineral spirits.
I have one more hammer to make and I will have replaced each one of my cast steel hammers with tool steel. |

How have you heat treated it?

Thanks Ray, Damascus? Probably never unless you want one.
Gabe, I heated it to CT then quenched it in 135 deg oil. After hardening I then tempered it for two hours at 400 deg. Same as a knife but with a bit higher tempering temps and a bit longer soak. |

How'd you cut the eye?
Just mill it in? |

The entire hammer and handle was done on my metal lathe. The steel bar was chucked and I used a drill bit and horizontal boring bar for the eye.
