!!!!???mystery metal???!!!!
spark test, almost non-existant sparks
DOES rust a lil if heated and let to air cool looks like steel if ground on ie white metal. when I heat it to a orange red a SHOWER of sparks when struck and metal explodes apart into crumbly pieces, breaks are similiar to brass if you try to work it was the internal footpetal frame thingamabob from a old upright piano, I THOUGHT it was steel. |

possible but it looks machined, lots of internal cuts and bevels as well as threaded areas for bolts and whatnot, heck ill do a cut/break test tommorow and look for silicates,

Cast iron sparks dark orange feathery sparks. What type of grinding wheel were you using to test it?

Sounds like a pile of crap, at least as far as knifemaking goes. Get something better.

Just reread the initial post. I'm betting cast iron, or a very low grade cast steel - but not of a grade you can forge something useful from.

That sounds like the same as some A2 a buddy of mine and myself where trying to draw out a few weeeks ago. The chunks we worked with were hard to hammer and seemed to cool fast compared to 5160. Even the weld for the rod attached broke of on the A2. If you have more of this steel save it for toolbits and harden them in the forge. I am told this with compressed air for cooling maakes a good lathebit for softer metals.

I would doubt anyone ever made piano foot pedal frames out of A2 - cast iron or similar crap gets my vote, too!

...Cast iron that's been machined. If you notch it and facture it, it should show a course gritty grain and be brittle.

sounds like the crap old hotwheels were made from. They stamped it "dye-cast metal". I think it was aluminum actually... or zinc coated...something...???

cast iron ,mix it with bottle caps.
Twist all the big wires from the piano together and make your own cable... __________________ NT Barkin Turtle Tribe ~~~Life is what it is~~~ |
