Press question

Hey, Ed. I finally got my Imahgination Xpress up and running. It doesn't seem to have as much oomph as I thought it would. I know that one issue is that I made my beveling dies too wide....3 inches. They won't bevel at all How much pressure were you running in yours before you rebuilt it and how did you up the power? Mine is running at 1500 right now. Is that correct for the 16 ton stock press?
Thanks,
Joe Mandt

With dies that size, its likely that you won't get much outta the press. The more square inches of area that you try to press, the less psi you realize. Many of us have tried the bevel issue with a press, and most have found that in order to do it, it requires a series of 3-4 dies, that have relatively small surface area.

As for the pressure, mine has/had an adjustment under a cover on the hydraulic valve. Its nothing more than an adjustable bypass. I've always been running mine between 1800psi and 2000psi.

In my experience, most folks who don't have a lot of experience with a press tend to have overly high expectations of them. Its not something that will perform a task all in one "squish".....at least not most presses. Operations on a press are best done incrementally, a little at a time, otherwise you will wreck a work piece in short order.

There may be some slight variances in the components between your press and mine (mine was the second one Jeff and company ever produced), so my recommendation is to contact Jeff if you have questions....just don't want to give you bad advice.

I knocked out a couple of blades today. The one thing that the press is great for is keeping everything nice and straight. While the wide beveling dies won't actually bevel, they smooth things out a bit and make centering the edge a snap.
