Need help on butt plate

I want to engrave the butt plate on 2 knives. Anyone got an ideal on how to hold them? Maybe a hand make jig. Need some help with this one.

I use a strong magnet out of a harddrive to hold small peices when I'm grinding...they hold good, its quite a bit of work to get it to let go. but then you have to worry about the piece going magnetic. if you dont care if the peice is slightly magnetic, that seems to work fine for me

Thanks Chris, but I don't understand how I could hold this one with a magnet. It is already installed on a knife. I need to know if there is a way to hold the knife with my engraving block or will I need to build some other kind of holder.

Hi Joe:

you might not be able to hold the knife in your block unless it's very short
Can you remove the butt plate? that would be the easiest way.
But if not I would try using a jewelers saw pin type of setup.

Try a piece of wood 1"x4"by 6"long and cut a V shape on one side then clamp it to your engraving bench. By holding the knife firmly in the V you should be able to rotate it for engraving.

Hope this helps a little, maybe someone else can give you some ideas as well.

I know you'll figure a good way to hold it Joe. The main thing I want to see is your finished work, really gives me a lift! Also, I'm betting it won't be long before we start seeing your sons art on this forum Keep it up guy!

Joe,

I've been trying to solve the same problem.
What I've done in the past is construct an out-rigger for my vise out of hardwood slats, much like a jewelers ring clamp.
If you're familiar with the benchmate made by GRS...I'm looking to build a cylinder holding-type fixture within a cylinder, with the idea of holding a finished knife end-up, while having the rotational ability of an engravers vise.
The rub is...how can I use this set-up under a microscope?
My only thought is to make a separate, dedicated engraving station just for this situation.
Seems like a lot for an occasional job, but it looks like the only way to go.
Hope this gives you some ideas Joe.
...Anybody else have a clue?

Tim
