Stainless steel for bolsters
Hi guys,
Just a quick question here. If you use say 416 SS for bolster and want to pin them on how do you do it? I know you cant peen SS pins like you would brass. Do you use a arbor press?? Thanks for any thoughts Ross |

Ross,
I peen 416 with 416 pins just fine. Looks beautiful! Tapered hole, polished pin, smack 'em good, sand and polish. Steve Arbor press ain't gonna do it. A hammer is what you want. |

Stweve beat me to it ! In fact, 416SS pins on 416SS bolsters is the best way to getting a good looking invisible pin setup. Brass and nickel silver often have bolster material and pin stock that are work hardened to different degrees and will tarnish differently and become visible when sanded to the final finish. Doesn't seem to happen with 416SS. I dare say 416SS is easier to pein than brass or NS... Jason.

Hammers are fine but I think you will find that if you don't hit them just right you will still end up with visible pins. After much frustration with removing bolsters because of pin lines I ended up building a mini pin press. Very simple press.
Use two pieces of U channel 12" long 6 inches wide 3 inches deep. 4 threaded rods - 1/4 20 bolts ~16" long, 16 1/4 20 nuts, 1- 6 ton bottle jack and two 1" square pieces of hardened steel. 1. Drill 4 holes into each piece of U channel 1 at each corner. 2. Use 1 piece of U channel as a base, flat facing up, mark and drill out holes to attach bottle jack to center of base. 3.insert the 4 rods using top and bottonm nuts for each hole 4. Attach other piece of U channel to top of threaded rods, flat facing down, use nuts to hold in place upper and lower nuts. The two pieces of hardened steel go on top of the bottle jack and below the top piece of U channel. I hope this makes some sense, it is harder to describe than I thought. I will try to take a picture this weekend, but total cost on this thing is about $20 and will save you a bunch of headaches. Hope this helps Steve __________________ Stephen Vanderkolff Please come on over and check out my website. http://www.vanderkolffknives.com/ Thanks |
