Bowman, I couldn't agree with you more. Really fun and we are indeed very fortunate to have the kind folks here and this resource to draw from.
Now I'm attempting to make a sheath for one of my throwing hawks. It has an unusual shape and I'm not sure how to sheath it properly... so it's a fun little challenge. The sheath won't be for belt carry.... just need to securely protect the blade during transport and storage. This is the design I came up with so far. The welt outline is drawn in green. Not planning to do a fold-over, instead two pieces this time. Any suggestions much appreciated before I hack up more of the double-shoulder. __________________ Stay away from fast women and slow horses |

Welt's the proper approach Chris. Axes get bumped, dropped, bounced around....seems to be in their nature and they will come through a fold over with little or no effort just because of the mass behind the cutting edge.
That design should work very well. You making your own axes already? __________________ Carl Rechsteiner, Bladesmith Georgia Custom Knifemakers Guild, Charter Member Knifemakers Guild, voting member Registered Master Artist - GA Council for the Arts C Rex Custom Knives Blade Show Table 6-H |

Not making my own axes yet. I have two throwing axes which I've used for several years. They were made by a guy who goes by "Ragnar". The heads are nice and I just replace the hardwood handles when needed. I have a Viking Bearded Axe and Viking Belt Axe so far. He makes many different styles/period correct replicas but I like the Viking replicas since I'm Norwegian. They didn't come with sheaths and it was always a pain to transport them. I set up targets at my placer mine every year... myself and the guys like tossing. I'll probably pick up a couple more cuz it's so dang fun. Here's a short clip of me and a couple of the guys throwing them at the mine (I'm the cowpoke wearing green). FUN! __________________ Stay away from fast women and slow horses Last edited by rockhound; 02-05-2013 at 10:07 AM. |

Good looking axes. Never got very good at throwing axes, just a good shooter in the Seneca Run BP matches. Did win a few cutting competitions with my Doolittle Double-bitted speed axe back in the college years.
Hey, like the multi tasking......having fun and bustin kindling at the same time! The mine keeping you in beans? __________________ Carl Rechsteiner, Bladesmith Georgia Custom Knifemakers Guild, Charter Member Knifemakers Guild, voting member Registered Master Artist - GA Council for the Arts C Rex Custom Knives Blade Show Table 6-H |

Beans? I get a few good beans ... still need to find that motherlode to get the Bacon.
I went ahead and sheathed both of my hawks. They're snug as a bug in a rug. Nothing fancy, just function. I need to get some stamps and practice. This leather work is pretty addicting. __________________ Stay away from fast women and slow horses |

Looking pretty good there Chris. Your work gets better everytime I see it.
Great wintertime work......inside! Do a bit of digging and panning myself....GA gold and NC corundum (rubies & saphires), plus the occasional emerald from spoils. __________________ Carl Rechsteiner, Bladesmith Georgia Custom Knifemakers Guild, Charter Member Knifemakers Guild, voting member Registered Master Artist - GA Council for the Arts C Rex Custom Knives Blade Show Table 6-H |

I know you are a bit of a rockhound, we've chatted about that. I'm jealous of your area! Not only good for Gold but even more-so regarding gemstones and other goodies.

Most of the areas here, if not all, have been worked very hard, so getting anything decent requires major work and a lot of luck. Still, always fun to play in the dirt and creeks. Little tougher on old bones like mine, I now understand why my Dad liked having us boys around.
