rust
I put together a kit paring knife, for my wife( who is gorgeous by the way, and takes great dictation) it was my first knife and I dont know what I did to the blade, but it rusts every time in the dishwasher.
What can I do to prevent it rusting ?

Don't put it in the dishwasher!!!
 Seriously, dishwashers are nasty on a knives cutting edge and handle material. I usually just wipe mine off and put it away dry. What steel is it made of? If it is a carbon steel you could use lemon (something acidic) to give the blade a patina. This will tend to work like blueing on a gun. Good Luck! Bob Sigmon

The more polish on it, the less place water has to set up, so make it as smooth as posible.
Clean by hand and put it up. You might try a protective finish like a gun blueing. No more dishwasher, please.
