Re: Full moon forging

I forge a lot at night, but never paid any attention to what the moon phase was.

I don't know... there's just something about it. I like the feelings I get when I do it. It's different! Working on the "enchanted blade" project for over a year now, exclusively under full moons, has help change my perspective. It seems very natural to me.

Yep! Been there, done that

The Blue Ridge Tribe was born under a full moon. Achim, Tim and I forged on a full moon too.

Probably have but never paid much attention since my forge and stuf are in my shop most the time. I've got my anvil and forge outside for the next few months but think the neighbor may complain if I start banging on it after dark since its still quite light here till after 9PM. Maybe when the days get shorter.

Is the hammer any lighter when there's a full moon?

I'm thinking of doing a Solstice Blade this year... all day long, hopefully from start to finish.

The one thing I've been meaning to do is build a ritual forge up on the hill in the woods behind my house... and possibly some kind of small smelter. I think there'd be something cool about a ritual blade made completely by my own hand- including any of the tools needed to do it... so starting with a rock hammer and anvil!

...And yes, I forged an Athame under a full moon for a customer of mine. We also put some of her blood and some herbs on the billet before welding it. I enjoy commissions with a mythopoetic angle...

Beautiful knife, J. Loose. I usually christen all my knives with blood too, but only with my own blood, and that quite by accident.

I saw this video of Africans smelting. First they drank beer and cracked a few jokes. Then they sacrificed a chicken and sprinkled it's blood in the smelter. Later they roasted the chicken on the smelter and had it for lunch with some more beer.

Are we talking "ritual smithing" now?

Is that what full moon forging is?

I have never condoned blood sacrifices at full moon parties. We usually just spill a little beer on the anvil.

That does it.

From now on I'm doing all my cooking in the forge... it's not like I don't already drink a ton of beer down there...
