What size of washers do you use on liner locking folders?

I've been going with sizes from .010 to 015 but am thinking I might try .020 as I've read some do. For those that are using this size already I understand it's got to be good for you, but does it provide too much of a gap on each side of the blade, and for those of you who are not using this size , do you think the .020 is too much or have you just not concidered using this size? I'm in particular interested in the use of these for collector type folders. Thanks for any and all replies. Frank

Hi, Frank. I usually use 0.015" washers on my normal size folders.

Like Don I use 0.015". If I would try anything els I think I would go thinner to keep the knife from getting bulky.

For the last few years all I have used is .010 bronze washers. Now a days when I examine a folder that was made with thicker washers it immediately catches my eye...... I always think to myself "theres way too much space between that blade and the liners."

I started using the .010 thickness because it forced me to create tighter tolerances in all my parts, and for the first few times it was very frustrating, but eventually I think it has made me a better folder maker than I was before.

Well it's three out of three that say say with the .015 or less. That's good enough for me. Thanks all. Frank

Frank it really depends upon the size and style of folder being made. For my smaller folders I will use .005 to .010, for medium foulders to larde folders I will use either .010 to .015 depending upon the style as well as the size of folder.

I use 0.2 mm thick washers, (a little less than 0.01),whether it is a small or a big folder. I like the gaps between the blade and liners as small as possible, but still maintaining the smooth action.

I used to use .015, but switched to .020 a few years ago for a better closure detent (as you can leave more of the detent ball sticking up.) The gap would look unsightly on a traditional slipjoint or lockback folder, but on a locking liner it's just one of the charactaristics of the mechanism.

I haven't had that problem. I've found that if you use a No.53 drill and a 3/32 ball that this works for me on good detent positioning even with .010 washers.

I have even rolled down some bronze to 001 and 002 but have found it will tear very easily. Now I use 005 on all folders. The closer the fit the better. After folling down some on a vigor rolling mill I found that the 001 was so thin it would tear just putting it in. I used it on two knives and it tore just moving the blade.

I prefer .005 on most all my folders, rarely .010...Take Care...Ed
