I went to a gun show yesterday and all I got was a knife.
It is a 70's model 8 4 inch with Johnson roughback, and 1/2 inch black face compass
It needs to be cleaned up and sharpened, but the stag is great

Nice T&B Peter! Pretty stag and a uniformly deep stamp.

Peter,

Great acquisition, Peter! Next to 3's I love 8's. I picked this early 50's example up from e-bay a year or so ago and haven't been able to turn it loose.

Best,

Thanks Rick and Ron
This is my first older Randall knife and the only one I saw at the show. I am sure the stone for it was gone many years ago

Peter

It's not too late to congratulate you Peter on a great pickup!

Not too shabby an eight as well, "Rub-it-in Ron"

Cheers!

David

Peter: With a "no hone" sheath of your vintage, it's not surprising that the stone was lost over time.

David: Thanks. Maybe I'll change my forum name from BoBlade to Rubitin!

Best,

Another great score for you, Peter!

Super looking stag, and I'm pretty sure you have more chargeable options on your #8 than would be allowed today. I count six: stainless blade, nickel silver hilt, aluminium butt cap, black and aluminium spacers, stag handle, and a wrist thong! Well done!

Enjoy using this knife!!!

Cheers!

David

Yeah right, David!
I just don?t counted that exactely. My priority was only a nice looking user!
What?s with the old grind? Is that an extra option or not?

Super 8

I picked this up on e-bay recently Buy-It-Now. I "thought" i was getting a cool Old Yeller RB Scrimmed conventional Model 8. When I opened the package and saw the blade, I couldn't believe the size of it: 4 5/8"! That's the same length as a large Stanaback Special and an 8th of an inch longer than a Model 23! The only difference being that this blade was made from 3/16th" stock and not 1/4" stock. The back of the sheath confirmed it was a Model 8 as it was stamped 8-45. I called Perry and asked him if he'd ever heard of a 4 1/2" Model 8. He said he hadn't and would ask Gary. I also asked Rick about the scrim: He said he did it around 1981 and it was the first time he had tried white laundy ink on white Westinghouse paper Micarta knowing that although there was no contrast at the time, there would be when the Micarta aged yellow. He was right: The white scales are clearly defined. There was another surprise: The handle was made from two laminated sheets of Micarta! The seller had stated that this knife was a gift back in the mid 70's. I believe the 1st use of Westinghouse white paper Micarta was in the early 70's. I have no idea of when the handles were first made with a single thicker sheet. One last thing I want to mention: The black and white spacers are typical of what you might see on an early Bowles scrim or a Tom Leshorn knife. Anyway, I hope you enjoy the pics:

Best,

Ron

What a superb, unique Model 8. You have a great nose for finding the out of the ordinary RMK.

Congratulations.

Very cool model #8 Ron, I remember it. Back then I would get 10 knives of the same model to scrimshaw but of course no sheaths. The first set were model #3s, the second set were model #12-6" Little Bears, I don't recall what the third set was but the fourth set were model #8s. Something that may be of interest is that those early knives to be scrimshawed were made specifically to be sent to me for work. All these knives carried that unusual spacer combination as you can see in my serial number #001 which Gary sent me to photograph a few years ago. It's entirely probable that all ten model #8s were 4-5/8" blades. I may have a photo of those model 8s.... if I can find it.
