Check this out!

I decided to try and break the test piece again today. It's been laying around "un-tempered" for a while now. Since it figures that there is some tempering going on "during the quench", in the middle section of the blade, I decide to test the edge. The edge itself is a bit under and eigth of an inch thick. I checked it with a file first, and it was dead hard for 1065. I layed it over the hogging anvil with tongs and gave it about 12 strikes, as hard as I could (!), right on the edge, with a four pound dome faced hammer. The edge refused to crack or bend!!!

Normally this steel breaks/cracks a lot easier in the dead hard state.

Seriously.

This is the first time in 26 years that a test piece would not bend, crack or even dent. I am quite surprized! I'm not sure what's causing it. All I really know is, I quenched it a certain way under certain circumstances.

Is it possible to bypass the flaws and impurities in a piece of steel and bring it's heart and soul to the surface?

...maybe...

I think you basically have to "whoop" the steel, (and tickle it at the same time), if you want it do what you want it to do.

"When you whip it,
Whip it good." Devo...

"It's better to whip the steel, than be steel whipped! "

... if it's not possible, then I guess we should all sell our anvils, and become stock reduction knifemakers.

better keep this one as a demo, tai. then the clients won't be so shocked when you whack on the one that you want to sell them!
.
sounds like you brought out the best in this piece.

Don't know my own strength, dang near bounced a 400 pound anvil with a six pound hammer at my last demo. The owner was afraid I was going to split the thing in two! I actually busted the horn off an anvil in my 20s,... but I can dang sure hit harder and faster now than then, 'cause I'm more experienced. The whole earth trembles when I whale over my hogg'n anvil! hee hee hee !!!
