"Model of the week" (week #8 model #8

Lets get week number eight off to flying start with your pictures of your model #8s (trout and bird knife). This week should be a dandy! I don't yet have one but can't wait to see yours! Should be some old ones, some new ones and some in-between ones. So get out those 8s and pick your favorite camera and blow us away with your treasures. I LOVE PICTURES!

Thanks for starting, Seussbro. I have a pic I can post and I'll fill in with some history when I have a little time. This one is a "sock drawer" knife. Originally purchased in the mid 50's and spent it's entire (boring) life doing nothing but conversing with socks in the dark. Socks don't know much about huntin' or fishin'. They can tell washing machine stories and complain about stinky feet and that's about it. You gotta feel sorry for this one

Best,

Ron

Ron, I am totally shocked. Who would have thunk that you might have a #8 pinned stag lying around? The socks were really easy on that one and I for one, am very appreciative that one in that condition is still around and pristine. I somehow know I'm going to get in trouble with this thread being a fisherperson and all. I got a feeling I'm going to get a hankerin here! Oh those hankerin feelings

Seuss / Rob,

I SWEAR: If the three of us could go fishing together, I would celebrate the occasion by cleaning all our fish with that knife!

Best,

Ron

Fishin'? Did someone say "fishin'"? I'll be ready next year. We are fixin' to get, yet another, big blow. Lake Okeechobee is at 17 1/2'. Normal for this time of year is 12 1/2'!! Ron: I'll do the guiding..next year the day after the Guild show, in Orlando! Best, Captain Chris Stanaback
P.S. I'm on my way to Tulsa and don't have any pics in my laptop...Sorry, CCS...No Model #8's to share!

It's never too late to see your 8's

Howdy folks!

This #8-4 was purchased when my knowledge of RMK was extremely low (in other words, only slightly less than it is now). It was the third Randall to enter my collection way, way back in the winter of '03.

I wanted this knife because my wife and I are serious cat lovers of both the big and little variety. The reverse side of the knife has a rather sad looking Panther descending from a tree, who beckoned for us to bring her into our home.

The scrimshaw artist is Gary Harbour.

Now let's see you get out from behind the eight ball, we want to see some more #8's...

Cheers!

David

This thread brings up a few questions. I don't currently own a #8 but I have two on order, one each, old and new. My questions: 1) Which version do most users here prefer? 2) Why?

TIA.

David, I meant to tell you in my last post, nice cat, nice knife. And this was just your 3rd RMK?

Hi Art!

Welcome to the Knife Network.

According to Bob Gaddis, author of "Randall Made Knives", Bo Randall was inspired by his hunting and fishing friend Litch Steinman, and developed this neat little knife especially for him in 1946. The first versions "turned out so well that Bo decided to make it part of the Randall line."

I believe the "Trout and Bird" Model #8 first appeared in the 1947 catalogue, or there abouts.

Cheers!

David

Hi Art,

I hope you don't mind even more "and then some" Moosehead did a great job splainin' but I can add a few pics:

The 1st batch of 9 Bird and Trouts were made by Bill Platts in October of 1946. One of these was given to Bo's good friend Litch Steinman and the the remainder were given to dealers. These 9 knives differed from those made thereafter in that the stock was only 1/8th thick (vs. 3/16th). The top knife in the photo below is the one made for Litch and the bottom one handled in ivory was made for a gentleman who ran a sportingsgoods store at Walloon Lake where Bo had a vacation hime.

There was a "gap" in catalog years between 1945 and 1948, although there were 3 versions of the 1945 catalog. In the last version Bo inserted a flyer introducing the Model 8 as follows. In the 1948 catalog the Model 8 tooks it's place along side it's brethern.

Best,

Ron

I went to a gun show yesterday and all I got was a knife.
It is a 70's model 8 4 inch with Johnson roughback, and 1/2 inch black face compass
It needs to be cleaned up and sharpened, but the stag is great
