Type of finish?

Does anyone know what type of finish this is on the blade? It almost looks like it was forged, and then left untreated.

The knife is from the member Santi, but I searched his posts and could not find any other information on the knife.

The finish is forged, with forge scale left on in the neo-tribal style. Its forged very close to final profile, then only the work to create the edge is done, as shown. The scale is a heavy layer of oxidation and is actually protective of the carbon steel. It also seems to absorb oil, in my experience, and it quite easy to maintain.

Hard to tell what wood is used there from the photo. If it is dense and close-grained with an oily texture, its probably a tropical rosewood. If its more open grained and lighter, its possibly a mahogany of some sort. Just that those are commonly used for these purposes and make great sheaths and are very durable. Jason.

I dought that the scale is left on, Most Neo-Tribal knives are etched in vinager to remove it, mine are on my rustic finish. Gib

Thanks, you guys have been so great that I think I am going to have to ask another question.

Full Image

This knife by maker Allen Elishewitz has a stainless Damascus blade, but the Damascus pattern is not visible on the unground portion of the blade.

How was this accomplished? Is this simply the effect acheived by grinding the blade flat after it has been etched?

The portion of the steel that doesn't show pattern has probably been masked with anything from nail polish to artists' resist (asphaultum) prior to it's trip through the acid bath to etch the steel.
