Andy the more I looked at that knife that is sweet how close you got the inlay to the mother of pearl. Not an easy task. Did you use a graver and then the high speed hand-piece for undercut or just the hand-piece?

Yes a combination of both Mike. Under the incredible power of the microscope the border looks huge

The photos were on my webhosting server which unfortunately suffered a major crash yesterday. I am not certain when it will be back up and running. I may have to recreate the links at some point. Sorry about the lapse. It has affected my email as well :evil

Jim, Thanks a bunch for the info! I have always loved little rows of gold dots, even tapering down in size. Been so long since I inlayed any gold this will be like starting over lol. Never used much gold anymore since developing the color engraving. I do have a set of beading tools in different sizes Julie Warenski told me about for doing the beaded borders but seperate little dots are way cooler. Gonna have to give it a try on an AKI knife.
Thanks again!

I may have missed it, but has anyone addressed annealing of the gold wire yet? Some do it with only a Bic lighter!

Robert,
I think we bantered that one around a short time ago but rather than look for it again here's the skinny. I just hit the gold wire with a propane torch flame set fairly low. You want to bring it to a red hot briefly and let it cool slowly. It's no big deal. Just don't let it get too hot or it will melt right down the wire I will use this technique to create a small gold ball which I can flatten to fill small roundish pockets like at the head of a scroll. If you search the forum you can find other info on the topic. But that's it in a nutshell.

Robert
The annealing temperature for fine gold is 400 degrees F, 18kt 1000 - 1100 degrees F, 14kt 1200.
Fine gold will go limp very quick kinda like fried onions. That doesn't sound right
