Don

I think so. I'm going to order a reamer the exact size of the pins. I have started to cut out some of the material so i can get started as soon as the final is over this week.

Ricky, I usually use 1/8 straight pivot pins for dowels, or a combination of both. The threads inside the pivot pins come in handy to fasten the knife together.

I started making another barlow today. I'll post pictures tomorrow and try to get closeups to show how the pivot pins are used.

I've signed up for a table at the Central Texas Knife Show in Austin, Texas the last weekend of July, so I can use the second barlow to display on my table.

Now i've got to get to work and make some folders, hunters and bowies for the show.

Here's my WIP on the second barlow. I'm going to post a few photos to show the construction details.

This picture shows the liners, blade, bushing, washers, dowel pins, screws, and the one pivot pin.

I made the two brass washers from .010" shim stock. I clamped the stock between two pieces of wood and used a drill a little over 3/16" to drill thru the wood and brass stock. Clamping thin material this way prevents distorting the brass as the drill goes thru it.

No burrs, and a good slip fit over the bushing.

Closed.

One pivot, two dowels, two flat head screws.

I'm going to cover up all the screws when I make the bolsters and scales, so none of these will show.

Wish I had another set of the gold lip mop scales I used on the other knife. They sure made a beautiful knife.

We'll see how it all comes out within the next few days.

Ricky, I told you that I usually use two pivot pins, one for the pivot, the other at the back end for a dowel. Doing that, the pivot at the back holds the back spacer and the scales in place and the screws show on the finished knife.

For this knife, since I expect to show it on my table at the Central Texas Knife Show, I decided to hide all the hardware under the bolster and scales.

When it's finished, it will have 4 small screws on each side in line.

Si Dios quiere.

Come on, guys, get busy!!! Let's see some more WIP.

Don

Would a 1/2 ton abor press work for pressing in the bronze bushings in the blade?

Yes, if that's the way you want to do it.

My bushings are always a slip fit inside the blade. Gives more surface area for the bearing.

Don't give up on me Don, I have been working on my Barlow and I promise to post WIP photos soon, maybe tommorrow. I may be a little old fashioned or locked in tradition but I am having a hard time making my Barlow a liner lock. I am not saying it is hard to do but hard to do it to a long time traditional barlow pattern. I do have a liner lock pattern I use for an EDC of mine but it is not a barlow, gotta love those old barlows.

This one is slightly larger than the first one.

2 3/4" blade made of ATS34 hardened and tempered to Rc 59, hand sanded to 2,000 grit.

Thunder Forged random pattern damascus bolsters and back spacer.

MOP irredescent scales.

24k gold plated screws.

All assembly screws and dowels are covered by the bolsters and scales.

.050 6al/4v liners anodized light green.

Linerlock, of course!

OK, so now we've seen Twisty's WIP and the finished barlow, and two of mine.

What are the rest of you doing?

Remember the first post on this thread? I double dare you!!

Gotta get going, remember our finish date target is July 4th, 2005.

No, not 2006!

Smile

Our good friend Frank Niro in British Columbia just sent me a set of stabilized bark mammoth scales.

Frank, did you dig up the tusk in your back yard?

Came in the mail today, and I love them. I'll have to decide what kind of knife to use them on. They're big enough for a hunter or anything else. Any ideas?

Many thanks, Frank.
