Loveless templates?
Has anyone ever taken a copy of the original loveless templates and made them available for those who want to continue making the designs? I have found various patterns and used photos, etc but I believe the original profiles are important to preserve. I love to make the loveless style and I would very much like to know that I have gotten it right to the original lines.

There used to be a web site with them on, but I don't think so, anymore. Plus, even Bob would make slight changes to a pattern now and then, even the famous Drop Point, so you may have two "original" patterns and not have the same outline, exactly. It would be good to have them all available, but those who do have an original pattern are pretty protective of them, at times, it seems.

If you search for the PDF version of "Living on the Edge The logos of the Loveless legend" by Al Williams you can download and print the book. I assume it is now in the public domain. He has pictures of many of the Loveless designs against a background of 1/4" graph paper. This will give you all the designs you could ever need. It is great. Hi Paul,
This may be the site Steve was referring to in an earlier post? It is a memorial of Bob Engnath's legacy. http://www.engnath.com/ Full of great info. This Page in particular i think will help. http://www.engnath.com/lovedraw.htm Cheers, Steve |

That's the one, Steve. Thank you. They always seemed to be very close to Bob's own patterns. Some are modified, somewhat, like that first 'Chute, which always had a double guard soldered on, but the Drop, Caper Finn, Fighters, Utility look very good. Thanks again.

Thanks guys, looks like I was on the right path. I got started making knives with one of the blades ground by Bob Engnath probably around 1981 or so. I am very familiar with his catalog and web page. In fact, I used the template in the catalog for my Loveless style fighter that is in the January '14 issue of Blade (P.79).
The problem I run into with the Engnath templates is that I feel like my blades sometimes come out a little wide-probably because I am grinding to the line on the paper which was likely traced around a template. I was hoping someone would have made a set of cut templates to accurately capture the subtleties of Bob's geometry. I am doing a batch of fighters in several sizes. I am just trying to be sure I get them close. Steve V. Thanks for your note as well, I will check out the page you noted. I appreciate you all taking the time to lend a hand. Paul Brach |

That's great Paul!
Perhaps some critical dimensions such as blade widths, lengths, point where the clip breaks, thickness's etc, etc..... may be a little easier to come by from those the know? Steve |

Steve V,
I downladed the living on the edge book...It is great! The graph paper will help a lot. I have been trying to do a slightly narrower hunter and there is a perfect example on page 116! Thanks again guys, this is going to help me dial it in and take things to the next level. PB |

Paul,
Try this grind height calculator to check your blades are the right width and thickness for a given wheel size. It does a great job of predicting where your grind line will terminate. http://bimjo.com/free/hg_calc.xls Until I found this I also had the same problem with blades being too wide, and then having to stretch the grind up the blade so it looked right. Cheers, Steve |

I just realized I am the only one on this thread whose name is not Steve!
Steve M, thanks for the calculator however, it won't work for me because I am flat grinding. I have decided I like the cutting performance of a flat ground blade with a Moran style convex edge better than a hollow ground blade with a bevel. Yes, I know what you are thinking, a Loveless style blade with a Moran style edge....Yes I am having an identity crisis! I just tried to upload a photo of the first two. Not sure if it worked. |
