HELP!! Need Ideas for Boy Scouts!!
Ive been asked to do a 2 1/2 day demo for a group of Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts.
total of 50 boys. Im looking for ideas! I had thought mabe doing spike knives for the older boys, but looking for somthing simple and easy for the younger guys. Mabe a card or napkin holder made from small diameter rod?? Needing somthing thats not too labor intensive, and requires very little in the way of finishing. Any thoughts? Thanks and God Bless Mike __________________ "I cherish the Hammer of Thor, but I praise the hand of God" |

Hey Mike, how long are you going to be spending with each group? I just did a one day demo but only had about 1 hour with each group, so it was more of an over view than a full demo.

When I was in the boy scouts ,in ancient times, I made a number of rings for my 'bandana' and got many good comments though few others made them. Lots of possibilities for a wrought iron ring.

Mike, Remember back when I displayed that "SPORK". Those little buggers make great additions to any Boy Scout Mess kit. Easy to make also.
Good luck bud ! Shane |

The "spork" idea is terrific.
For more ideas, try the anvilfire website: http://www.anvilfire.com/iForge/index.htm They are quite a few ideas posted there. __________________ God bless Texas! Now let's secede!! |

Lots of good projects at Anvilfire. If they are making things, it's extremely helpful to have more than one forge set up. I taught several scouts and their fathers the metalwork merit badge with the project being an adjustable-height colonial inspired candle holder. We ran two forges. Three pieces in the fire per forge seems to be about the limit, one hammering while two are heating then switch. Pre-cutting the stock helps a lot. My hand-crank blower got a real workout that day, one kid got so inspired cranking that he showed the rest how easy it was to burn the ends off their work Next time I would go with a slightly simpler project, this one worked out ok but it took them an entire day. Teaching is great fun, and one of the scouts I taught went on to attend a class at Campbell so it can be a good way to get more people interested in smithing.

I had a group of Cub Scouts come by my shop not to long ago......I took some 1/4" round stock and let each one take a turn hitting the red hot end untill it lost the heat. I would then cut the end of the bar and flatten the end a bit.......Let the boy cool it in the slack tub. I had a helper that day so I would send the boy over to him for drilling a hole on the old hand crank drill while I worked with the next boy forging. We made sure there were no sharp edges and I did each one up with bee's wax.....Gave them some string and they wore them as necklaces (you could tell them it's a Warrior charm or something to keep the Wampus away at camp!) It was cool... they all came out different and the boys were very proud. I did a group of about 15 in one to one and a half hours. I would suggest not using your favorite anvil or hammer for this....those young kids can be monsters!
Good luck! Mace Oh yeah, Make sure they wear saftey glasses and put some gloves on. 8o __________________ ABS Journeyman Smith www.laurelrockforge.com "Ain't nothing more useless than a dull knife or a short piece of rope" Last edited by Mace; 10-12-2004 at 07:46 PM. |
