hornless anvil

I am sure some of you have seen this on other lists--sorry, but here I go

Dear List,

I have the chance to purchase a hornless anvil. From the photos, it
appears the horn was shorn off rather cleanly. The anvil is 125# without
the horn and has only a hardy hole, no pritchell. The owner said this
might be a very old Mousehole--anyone know? The edges look good and the
top looks pretty clean and flat. It is 12" long, I am not sure how wide,
but about 4".

I will be checking the "action" with ball
bearing and hammer(s) on Sat. morning. Asking price is $95, which works
out pretty well by the pound.

Does anyone know what this might be, thoughts on the price, general
comments, etc.?

Thanks,

John

John , any anvil with a good face is worth $95. The horn broken off is not a problem to most bladesmiths. If you are doing ornamentle blacksmithing it could be. I think Mousehole is a brand name just like Trenton or Peter Wright. One of my anvils is dead, i.e. not hardened. It doesn't ring and it dents easy. But I used it for years with no problem... very quiet too.
