Bending Titanium
I still haven't had a real chance to do much work yet but in my planning I want to do my own pocket clips and was wondering how hard is it to bend Ti into sping-clip style pocket clips.
I also have an idea for a little something extra on a liner lock that would require a tab be left on, then bent so that it fell under the blade. Yeap, it's a copy of what they use on Gerbers Applegate-Fairbairn, You can see it a little on the middle pic on the left. Mine would be strait, not like there?s that has an inside-curve to it, but the same idea. BTW, I'm not copying the Gerber as a whole, just the extra feature on the lock. __________________ Freedom needs a soldier A nameless faceless one A young girl's lover A baby's father Some mother's son Last edited by mikec; 07-22-2003 at 11:59 AM. |

As with most other things, bending titanium is easier when you have the right tools. I made a few ti pocket clips similar to the pattern you put in your post. Ti is very springy and getting those sharp, clean creases like the commercial ones have was a problem. In fact, the only way I could get the shape I wanted was to heat the ti until red and then shape it on a jig that I had built.
I suspect the commercial pocket clips are made using a sheet metal brake which is a tool I don't own. If you have one then you're probably all set. If not, you'll have to get creative .... |

I posted that pattern but any shape will do, the sharp angles were the only picture I could find. If having it with curves is easier, thats fine with me. I just knew that Ti did have some spring to it and wasn't sure.
For my Gent. patterns I've got a milled clip that I've designed which will be easier I guess. Thanks! __________________ Freedom needs a soldier A nameless faceless one A young girl's lover A baby's father Some mother's son |

I have two pieces of 1/8 ats about 4 in long I hardened. They have dead flat edges. I put these in my large bench vice put the Ti between them and use padded pliers to bend them. I've used this on Ti as thick as .065 with no problems. hope this helps.

The sharp creased pieces are made very simply. I have watched them do it. The blank is placed in a die and then pressed cold with an ordinary arbor press. It is very easy indeed.
