Our friends from Europe

Hello guys,

I have been making new friends at the British Blade Forum and I quite enthusiastic with the norse style. Puukko seems to be very confortable everyday knives and, by God, they have great burls on those knives!

Here are a couple from a new friend who is a totaly hobbist maker, but that illustrate my new growing passion for the style!

Dave Barker is a british mate who lives in Norway. It is very usual for professional smiths to sell bare blades to be mounted by hobby makers, wich is the case here. Damascus blades are from Mr. Steen Nielsen. Dave makes six knives an year.

I just love the burls and the sheaths ... they all give a great sense of tradition to the blades, along with the patterns and the characteristic edge grind.

Cheers!

I really like what you did with that curly birch!! It looks like it's on fire. What was the process you used to get that?

Some nice looking work here

I like Mut's knife of course, but then Kevin's blade helps. Hmmm, a Scandinavian blade made by a Cornishman living in the USA then sent over to Norway.....and promoted by a Brazilian. Is this an international forum or what?

Roger

The process is something that i have worked out since i started making in 2001. This is the only thing that makes my Scandis different to the other makers so i won't go into details as to how i do it.

However.... it does involve layering the colours, and a combination of water based and spirit based dyes. I then put the whole thing in the oven on about 60 degrees for about 10 mins ( it varies from bit to bit.

After baking I sand it until i get the effect i want, then there is oil etc .

thats about it. I like making them but that one took about 40 hours, so i don't make em that often. Special order only! Or as a thanks for some great blades. i use no power tools .

Thumbs up

Promoting... now that is a word I would never think of in this case

Seriously.. I do promote the guys I work for, the brazilian guys on my website, in a commercial kind of way. But I like knives from all over the world, and I guess I like to put up a few good words about someone's job when I think they deserve it. There is no commercial interest in this now.. I just think it is amazing how can someone get such a good look on a handle and do all the work by hand, and I like to raise my thumb for that and share the sight.

That's all
