Leather Quality

I have been practicing making sheaths for a few months now. I am working on my 9th and 10th sheaths now and I have almost used up all of the leather that I had bought from Tandy.
I have read on several posts that the leather Tandy has is not that great. So before I buy more I wonder if I could get some advice on what to look for in a nice sheath leather.
Also some sources for it would be great.

Thanks

You will probably get several opinions, but my choice is Wickett and Craig Tannery.

I buy their saddle skirting in either Utility or Special grade. You can buy as little as one side.
They have four colors available, Russet, Chestnut, Brown and Black. I buy all four, don't like to dye leather. They will split it for you free of charge as the lightest saddle skirting sides are 8/10 oz. I use 7/8 and 2/3 so I have everything split to order. I also fully line everything I make and if you don't then the 8/10 unsplit would be about right for you.

Good Luck

Paul

another source that also offers shoulder which W & C doesn't offer very often is RJF Leather (Roger has a website) - it's old style pit tanned leather from Portugal and IMO is some of the best I've seen in years - it als comes in various grades, sizes, and colors.

The beautiful sheaths created for storing the knife elevate the knife one step higher. It celebrates the knife it houses.
