Damascus and Rosewood Dagger
Hi.
This is something I have been working on and just finished. The blade, oval guard and pommel nut are forged 138 random layer damascus...the pommel is nickel silver, and handle is Rosewood. 7 1/2 inches overall. Critique (bad and good) is welcome. Thanks. |

Very nice indeed. And that is some of the nicest rosewood I have seen lately. Lots of room there for an inlay or two.

I usually don't like a flat on a handle, but this one carries the outline really well, sort of a mummy outline. The Damascus is superb. I really like it.

Thank you for the comments.
Hammerdownnow..yes, its my own damascus..one of the first billets that I made on 'bowies' (ron claibornes) press. A simple 138 random layer of 1084 and 15n20. Fox....Funny you should mentions inlay. I was thinking of doing something. I have just began to experiment with silver wire inlay, but the rosewood woud have been to hard a wood (for me anyway).I almost made the handle out of tiger maple with the intention of inlaying. The photo looks like the handle is slighty loff symetrical, but its just the angle of the photo.....I wasnt intending to flatten the handle quite so much...I turned it on a lathe first , then was just going to shap it into the guard.....but it felt too big . So I continued the flat further up..It actualy feels very good in the hand. I am going to attempt to make a wooded scabbard out of basswood then wrap it in leather and stictch it along the back (almost Scandinavian style). I have never made one before, so it will be a learning experience. Thanks again. Kevin. |
