Moving to New York State, Am I in Trouble?
It looks like I may be moving sometime soon. We are looking at a property in New York State for other business reasons. However in looking over New York State Law it looks like I could have a real problem. As I read it, having a double edge knife or one with a dirk profile is an automatic assumption of criminal intent. Is that correct? I'm really concerned. If that is in fact the way the law is written and enforced that would write off the vast majority of knives that make up most of my work.

Checked that site. That's were I got my read of New York law to begin with. I was hoping to get a reply from a new York Knife maker. __________________ Scott B. Less taxes if truth be known. Property taxes in California are out of sight. Mostly because propery values are way too high. __________________ Scott B. Got news for you, according to the latest tax lists, NY gouges more than any other state. (It tends to go back and forth with Mass.) NY is just better at hiding taxes than CA. (Mario Cuomo used to say they weren't tax increases, they were "revenue enhancements".) I only spent a few years living there, but I spent at least a decade making up for what I lost in taxes.
As for law enforcement, NY is pretty paranoid. While I lived there, a guy was stopped for speeding in the same town I lived in, then arrested for carrying a weapon. The weapon? A softball bat. He was on his way home from a game and had the bat in the back seat. NY could easily be divided into 3 states with totally different personalities, so it makes a big difference where you live. Central NY is as different from the Hudson Valley as Southern Cal vs. Northern Cal. __________________ God bless Texas! Now let's secede!! |

It's fine... just say you're a maker or a collector and have the knife in question inaccessible... such as wrapped up and taped in paper or something. Even in NYC, the worst case scenario as far as knife paranoia goes, this is all you have to do. Otherwise the New York knife shows would never happen...
Where in NY are you considering? |

Thanks, that's about what I am getting from everyone that answers. However a call to local law enforcement may be a good idea.
Looking at thirty acres in South Erie County about 30 miles south of Buffalo. __________________ Scott B. You'll be fine;I've lived here all my life and never heard of anyone that wasn't caught doing something illegal being charged with carrying. 30 miles south of Buffalo is still WNY which is pretty moderate politically, except for the occasional wacko moving here from NYC. I live 10 miles North of Buffalo and outside of the freak snowstorm like last week, it's a great place to live; beautifull country; great hunting, and some of the best fishing you'll find anywhere.
Taxes are high but the low cost of living more than make up for it. I have an Uncle who lives in CA and his house isn't much different than mine except he paid 6 times what I did! Dave |

About 10 hours... though I'm sure we could meet halfway at one of many events.
