Inspired by History

One thing that might be interesting to see is some work from Smiths who do work that is historically inspired...

Not too many people are familiar with Jake's work. I met Jake at the ABS Fall Hammer-in here in New England.

I saw Daniel Winkler's work at a knife show before I got serious about knives. The thing I liked about his work is that it looked like it came from a certain period but it had something more to it...

Who else is out there playing with history?

Well Jon you were right :cool:, I very much like Daniel's stuff and Karen Shook's sheaths are something else.
Also I like this term "historically inspired". For me that means someone is working in a period "style" and with the period correct materials yet doing original work not just copies. I learned in part by copying originals, but now I find the idea of continuously doing direct reproductions very stultifying.

Here are a couple of maker's that impress me:

RMJForge - these guys make some very nice historical hawks and have quite a bit of info on there site as well.

For the Scottish side I really like Mike McRae's work at
Scotia Metal Work

There are many many others out there but I will leave it to others too add to this list.

Cashen is right up my alley and we've had a couple good conversations. Great guy and very free with information that some get pretty tight-lipped about. He has also set up some very informative heat-treating info including a great salt tank page.

Rose, those Hawks are nice and surprisingly good deals! I smoke fine tobacco from a shop in Virginia that I've patronized for 15 years now ( I started young... ) One of those Pipe-Hawks will find it's way into my collection at some point...
