Gotta polish her up a bit. But i'm kinda having fun withthe steel's natural desire to curve.

Oh yeah i think this is my first post. Hey guys i'm a newbie, been forging for about 5 months, but i was reading and studying for about 2 yrs prior.

Thanks, that model is kind of my favorite too. I just posted an Oconee on the display forum that I don't have up on the site yet.

Welcome Rustboy! Looks like you're all set up with your charcoal forge. Have you got it figured out what to do if you want it to stay straight instead of curved? Sometimes though the natural tendency of the steel to create curves makes some nice effects. Scagel took advantage of this in some of his knives.

Well sad news and good news.

Sad 1st : Quench - slight warp - straighten then.... snap. Then angry fat man throw knife on concrete and shatter. well after i finished crying, i noticed that the grain size looked to be very tight and uniform so i know that my quench technique is working

My first few i put a counter bend on bu ti figured why since it was only 1/8 stock

hey Tim the anvil is a piece of upside railroad track that's 8" X 5 1/2". works great and is really quiet. I have another small piece set track side up to forge out my tangs.

rustyboy,

How did you mount your RR track? I have a short section I'm going to try and set up this spring. . .

The upside down track i set with cement in a old cast iron enamel pot, then hammered down the walls around the concrete. Weighs about a good 55 pounds on it's own. Then i just anchored it down to a table i reinforced with extra braces.

I'll post some pics of the set up later.

Thanks! I guessed that might be the case, I just couldn't tell from your picture. I will probably mount mine in concrete in a 5 gallon bucket for the extra weight, that way I don't need to strap it down. How thick is the base of the track on yours? I need to look at mine and decide which side is going to go up. The base is flatter, but the rail itself is thicker. . .
