Sheath Mold
While talking about this forum, a friend of mine asked me a question. She and her husband has bought several knifes over the last few years. Due to moving several times the sheath got both a modly odor and look. Is there any help for them. All I know is Vinegar and water?

Vinegar will usually do a pretty good job. After it's dry, they may want to seal it up with some wax.

I had used vinegar and water about a 50/50 mix on my leather wading shoes, but was not sure how it would effect the color or texture of a sheath.

While the vinegar should take care of the mold/smell issue, it will also leach out any preserative and natural oils in the leather and make it brittle. You will need to "re-oil" the sheath before sealing. Appliation of neatsfoot oil will work but will also darken the leather a bit to a bunch (depending on the leather itself). Let dry completely (days) before applying any other sealer such as wax.
The mold had already broken down some of the organics in the leather so expect it to be splotchy when finished. That's leather. __________________ Carl Rechsteiner, Bladesmith Georgia Custom Knifemakers Guild, Charter Member Knifemakers Guild, voting member Registered Master Artist - GA Council for the Arts C Rex Custom Knives Blade Show Table 6-H |

Guys, Well I am back and my friends finally brought me the knives and sheaths for me too look at.
When I first asked the question, I thought it was just surface mold. But the blades appear to have rust forming about 2 inchs from the point that the knife enters the sheath. I believe I can clean up the blades, but are the sheaths a lost cause ? Jeff |
