Ivory Dirk

Just finished this one. I need a couple for my table or it will be empty at the shows.
8" overall
4" blade
440C mirror polished (its not black thats just the picture)
thunderforge dovetailed bolsters
mosaic pins
ivory slabs

Does anyone else get the queasies about using ivory on knives. I am pretty sure this is not mammoth ivory. It has no feel of age to it at all.

Thanks for your comments.
Steve

Hi Steve .. Nice knife , yesI have had severial problems with ivory worping or cracking .. I recall being at a knife show and I had a engraved and glold inlayed lock back with ivory scales on my table and by the middle of the day the ivory curled up and off of the liners .. I do like the looks of ivory I also have heard where some makers are getting it stablized ..

Ivory....

Somehow it has always troubled me when I see "Ivory" and "mammoth ivory". Perhaps I don't know enough about the fossil mammoth ivory and current day elephant ivory. It seems like there is too high a possibility to be responsible for an elephant being killed so I can have something pretty in my pocket. I'm sure there are perfectly legit sources of fossil mammoth ivory, but, it seems like it would be hard to tell the difference but, I'd rather not wonder.

Regards,
Dave

Dave
I have handled both and it is quite easy to tell the difference. Unfortunately this knife was made with a piece of ivory I purchased on ebay as mamoth but I am certain is elephant. Thats what I meant when I was talking about getting the queasies. I used it and now wish I hadn't. I will follow my consience inthe future. A knife is not worth getting the guilts over.
Thanks
STeve
