Quick nickel question
Is Nickel-200 sheet in 0.01" what is typically used for "pure" nickel in damascus? When preping this for forge welding, is just a light sanding usually all that is needed? Any special tricks other than fluorspar additive in the flux and increased forge temp for welding this?

Hi Don
dunno bout the stuff you got.....but the pure nickle sheet I got from K&N welded up real nice with just anhydrous borax ...used it in bsb blade - just a little sandin was all the Ni needed - matter of fact its real mushy when you weld it ... and I did it in a coal forge too ... take care Greg |

One of my "usual" metal suppliers has some surplus nickel-200 in thin sheet. I think the term used was "relatively pure" nickel. The price seemed right so I had thought about getting some to play with.

Nickel 200 (UNS N02200/W.Nr. 2.4060 & 2.4066) is commercially pure (99.6%) wrought nickel.
Table 1 - Limiting Chemical Composition, % Nickel (plus cobalt) .................................................. ......99.0 min. Copper............................................ .............................0.25 max. Iron.............................................. ...............................0.40 max. Manganese .................................................. ................0.35 max. Carbon............................................ .............................0.15 max. Silicon .................................................. .......................0.35 max. Sulfur .................................................. ........................0.01 max. Pretty much pure nickle. And Nickle 201 is the same composition, except with only .02 Carbon. Howie |
