Chief,
I'll take a stab at this.
Since Randall Kives are "Hand Made" they are like people, no two are exactly the same.
The knife maker must have decided to make this one a little shorter, perhaps to match the size proportion of the 5" Blade.

Hi David (Chief)!

Mike is quite right that the hilts are crafted to be proportional to the overall size of the knife. On a "Big Bear" Bowies (#12-8) the forward curved hilt is much longer than it would be on a smaller model.

Also as Mike says, since each knife is hand made, "...no two are exactly the same".

There's also a significant difference in the hilt size on my sterling silver Bear (on the left) and the nickle silver one on the right:

This can be attributed to the much heavier weight of the pure silver, not to mention the higher cost.

I hope this helps address your concerns.

Cheers!

The ever serious David

David. Your exquisite RMK stag Big Bear is sporting a .999% pure fine silver hilt, collar and butt cap. Only the spacer at the butt end of that example of American craftsmanship is sterling silver. The difference? Sterling is .925% silver and alloyed with harder metals which allow the thin spacers to take on the high polish given them by the Randall Artisans. Regards, Doug

Hi Doug!

Thanks for the clarification on "da silva".

I asked Mrs. Moosehead, who did pass Metallurgy and Precious Stones 101 if she knew that "sterling" silver was .925 pure and she replied "Obviously!"

I do like the way the pure stuff (.999) shines!

Cheers!

Mr.Moosehead

Mrs. Moosehead is a very smart lady. But then it is uncanny how ladies always seem to know a lot of really important stuff. This afternoon for example, I was trying on a winter coat here in Buffalo when a person of the female gender persuasion took a moment out of her busy day to offer that the coat was way too long for me. Alas, she was right, I am indeed built way too close to the ground.

Oops, wait a minute, this is the Randall Forum,

OK here's a picture of some Randalls with ivory handles and silver hardware. Wish they were mine! They're not.

For a change of pace, here's a picture of a Randall Desk Set I made for a friend of mine:

The coin had a little electric motor hidden in the stand which made it rotate, but the motor went tango uniform after just a couple hours. Oh well.

Regards, Doug
