Tru oil

Hi Ed, I have a question for you about Tru Oil use on a hidden tang handle. When you use Tru Oil how do you manage not getting it on the guard material, or do you just wipe it off the guard if it gets on there?

I wondered this same thing looking at Bing's recent knife that he posted. Was thinking maybe folks put a strip of tape on the guard?

I usually have several Q-tips ready. Dip them in a little acetone and wipe the guard right away. I have used Jeremy's idea with tape. I found when I put 15 -20 layers of Tru oil on. That the edge of the guard to handle material there is a little build up ridge of Tru oil that is unpleasent. I do thin my Tru-oil about 1 part Mineral spirits to 3 parts Tru oil. This allows me all those very thin coats to get the depth I want. By the way this is just the way I do this. Try both ways and see what works best for you. I'm sure others may have different ideas.
