Kiln?

Would an electric ceramics kiln work for a HT oven?

Something like this: http://prescott.craigslist.org/art/2293994090.html

This is one of those questions that pops up a couple of times every year. The short answer is 'yes' but you might want to do a Search to learn about the caveats that come with using various kiln designs.

This particular kiln does not get hot enough for stainless steel but would be fine for most carbon steel. At that price though, I would shop for a new HT oven, There are some brands available under $800 that reach higher temperatures ....

Go to www.usaknifemaker.com. Tracy carries Sugar Creek heat treating ovens with digital control available in two sizes.

One thing that you should consider in making your decision is "What is the largest blade that you will ever make?". It can get a little frustrating to not be able to get a large blade in your oven. The jewelry oven that you were considering looks to be a little short for much of a blade. Also, no matter which brand of oven that you decide on I would recommend spending a little extra and getting programable (digital) controls. It's worth the little bit of extra expense in the long run.

Hey guys thanks for the input. I wasn't aware that I could get a HT oven at that price. Considering I usually send knives one or two at a time to TexasKnife, a $500 HT oven could easily pay for itself in a few years. When the time comes I think I'll be looking at this one:

That's the one I'm looking at but it will also involve having some re-wiring done in the shop. Right now I'll have to make do with a ring style kiln that I have which I've also made and extention ring for.

True, the electrical work may be a challenge. It will most likely have to wait until I move into a place with a garage. My 7' x 10' shed powered by an extension cord from the house probably isn't the best place for a new toy like that
