alternate methods of holding kydex sheaths together
I would like to try putting together a kydex sheath, but I really don't like the big grommets that are used to hold the sheets together. They really seem to limit your design options. Would smaller rivets work? I know glue is out of the question. How about drilling holes and sewing them together with heavy fishing line?

If you make 1 piece sheaths and get it molded tightly enough it will stay together without any rivets/screws. The last one I made has two chicago screws in it to hold on the belt clip only. I have only been using .08 kydex though so I don't know how well the thinner stuff would do like this. I'm sure one of the pro's here will have some suggestions.

Do what knifemakers do!
Invent a clever way and share it will all of us! Actually, I'm looking for a better way myself. Tell me, why is glue out of the question? Andy __________________ "AN EXPERT IS A MAN WHO HAS MADE ALL THE MISTAKES WHICH CAN BE MADE IN A VERY NARROW FIELD." -NIELS BOHR |

I thought I read that it is difficult to glue kydex, guess I will have to check again. The other downside to glue is that for stuff like kydex it is often pretty nasty stuff to work with. Has anyone ever used tyvek in sheaths, they seem to use it for everything else these days. Kind of thin, but might make a neat waterproof liner.
Just checked, here is a page that talks about gluing kydex http://www.kydex.com/Technical/ShowA...?ArticleID=509 |

Grab you a $30 plastics welder from Harbor freight and go to town.
At some point soon I actually am going to try this. I've heard it works well and plan to check it out for myself. Some really interesting things could be done if you actually can weld it. |

I have not done it, but I hear that purple primer PVC pipe glue works on Kydex,
Does anyone know if that is true? __________________ Dean McKay NT Yard'n Ape McKay With a Strong Hand |

I've used PVC pipe cement on Kydex; the bond strength (no pun intended) I'd describe as "OK" only. Even with abrading the surface, I was able to rip the 2 pieces apart after 48 hours curing.

This is Ed Caffrey's little shop knife in the kydex he provides. I removed the screws, drilled a few additional holes, glued on a piece of emu leather using plain old Tanners Bond contact cement, and laced it all up using some emu strips. I got the knife from Ed early last year and have carried and used it daily, and it's held together just fine

I'm gonna try the plastics welder. I'll post results in a few days... sit tight.
I'll also try to find some really short hex bolts (set up like chicago screws) at a really cool little local hardware store that has every kind of fastener ever made. That might have a cool look for tactial stuff. OR... Maybe a lace job with very thin twisted SS cable... I have a key ring made with a small cable like that! HMMMM..... ...a cretive moment. I don't do this myself, but my electric heat gun I use on Kydex sheaths will get the edges hot enough to actually weld together. That is, melted together.
I don't understand why you guys don't want to use the Kydex rivets readily available from the knife supply houses. I get two different sizes. One small, the others large enough to be able to use a lace or thong. |
