Handle Materials

Hi All,

Ok, lets all think and share here.

What Handle material do you have or have seen that stands out to you on a RMK?

Any type of material.

What is your opinion of handle material that just made a RMK stand out?

What handle material deterred the beauty of the knife?

I've got one in our safe!!!!!

Yep, I was spontaneous! Which is really hard to believe if you really know me. I am a very analytical person and have to really think on something before go on buying something.

Ryan came to me last April at the Tulsa show while I, of course, was maning the tables. And told me of this knife and it took me 5 minutes and looked at him and said get it! But of course, the roll was turned, he just didn't know! I said if you don't get up and walk down there and buy then I will! I saw the value, one thing I did tell him though was if we buy it then it is NEVER to be sold!! And guess what it's his most treasured Randall.

Can anyone guess what it is?

I have many that I find that deterr from the beauty of a RMK.

Have fun guys and gals!

In order of preference:

1. leather
2. stag
3. white micatra
4. black micarta
5. green micatra

Can't afford ivory.
Haven't seen a wood grip that melts my butter but I haven't seen a mesquite grip yet. That might do it.

As for your question, I don't have a clue.

Hi Mary!

Good to see your post.

My favourite handle materials are stag, followed by various types of wood, including Ironwood, Ebony, Bocote, Spalted Maple, Rosewood to mention some.

I also really like the #25 style handle in these types of materials, which is available on a limited number of RMK models.

Like Tom, I'm not all that into Ivory.

I can appreciate different coloured micarta, but I prefer the natural materials.

Now to answer your question as to what is Ryan's "most treasured Randall"...

I'm afraid I haven't the foggiest... How about a little hint.

Cheers!

David

Well Mary and Ryan. I think you have me buffaloed! I reckon the rareness eliminates leather, stag, micarta and even my beloved ivory. How about horn or hog tusk which would be really curved and could look really cool on the right knife. Well, I don't guess there is a wrong RMK huh? I can't wait to see it!

Ivory-Whale tooth, fossil walrus, elephant, mammoth, just can't get enough of the stuff. I'm very picky about the fossil walrus and only have 6 which I have culled over the years. The trouble with fossil walrus is that you can start out with a knock-your-socks off piece and by the time it's been shaped and polished, the colors that made you buy it in the first place are gone.

I love the look and feel of elephant and mammoth ivory. A highly figured piece of elephant ivory is a piece of nature's art.

A piece of elephant ivory with a scrimshaw by Rick Bowles is fine art at it's best. I can look at it for hours and often do. The man is a genius whose work should be displayed in the Metropolitan, and the Louvre. In fact, there is no doubt in my mind that one day it will. As a wildlife artist his work is second to none. So....my favorite handle material is Ivory scrimshawed by Rick Bowles.

Did Ryan snag a 50 year Commemorative?

Regards, Doug

It's all good...

It?s all good? well, nearly. I?m not a big fan of the ?kitchen-counter-top-looking stuff,? i.e., the swirling-colored laminates, but to each his own.
I don?t think I have a favorite but I love that ?perfect? piece of stag (that curves and tapers a bit and fits my hand just so).
And I love leather with its wonderful character as it adapts to use.
Ivory is beautiful, of course, and though I don?t really mind checking and aging, cracks are annoying.
I like most of the woods as well, because there, too, the character can be so nice.
With the laminates, I mostly just like black and the old yeller stuff, though white can be nice too. (One of my favorite handle materials on folders is the simple ?yellow handle? material that Case uses?it has a sort of old fashioned-ness about it that I like).

Ok Here it is!

It is beautiful Mary and Ryan!

I likes it a lot.

I'll bet Mr. Silverguy likes it even more.

Now did I ask whether it was for sale or not? Oh yeah, it's not!

Thanks Mary!

Cheers!

Moosehead

More detail

Now as we have heard, there are very few made.

Narwhal is now banned for importation into the US.

I just wanted to make it clear, you may only drowl at this knife as this possession will be in OUR family for many years.

The hilts and butt cap are also made of Silver.

This is truely a massive piece and a large piece of the ivory compared to the other 2 bowies.

Arghh!

Mary, I bet the silver came from the Silverguy!

Now he's probably asking himself how he let this go on to his customer?

Actually, I'm sure he's very happy that the knife is in the possession of a couple who really appreciate it's rarity and beauty!

Cheers!

David

Moose,

Silverknife did not sell us this knife.

We bought off a very very reputable knife dealer table (authorized).

Hi Mary/Ryan,

Great looking 12-11 heavy!(i remember that heavy son of a gun) Great material, looks fantastic dressed down. Due to the size of the Tulsa shows it might be a good idea if you made the rounds.(look at it like one awesome shopping mall) Best Wishes, jason.

P.S. wife and pigsticker, that's a keeper alright! What a chunk! Is the Narwhal dense like elephant ivory? It looks to be but I've never held any of that material. Huge fondle factor on that baby!
