Hitachi blue high carbon steel

Hitachi blue high carbon steel. Does anyone know where to get this steel and how well does it perfom in the forge?

Don't know how it forges, but there are lots of Japanese bladesmiths making traditional Japanese cutlery with it. I found the Hitachi USA website and shot 'em an email to find out if there are any distributors in our neck of the world. It's Friday, so who knows when I'll get a reply.

This place lists "Blue Paper Steel" (apparently called such because of the paper it's wrapped in) which may or may not be what you're looking for. Look under Knives, Knife Blade Steel... they also have white paper steel. I've never dealt with these guys, but it was interesting enough to bookmark...

Edited to add: Both of these steels look like they'd make great blades judging from the chemistries.

Yep, that's what he's looking for! Great link, by the way. Unfortunately, it's located in Germany. There are two US distributors, but they don't seem to carry the raw steel (at least I didn't see any).

Got my reply today....not very encouraging.

Thank you for contacting us.
I am sorry, but there is no distributor handling Blue Steel in North America.
Technically we can import that steel from Japan. In that case, minimum order quantity would be around 500lbs.

Best regards,
Yasu Ohara / Hitachi Metals America
