bent blank fixes?
New to knife making and this forum,
Just recieved a damascus blank on from ebay, realized that there is a gradual, slight bend it it from where the blade would begin to the end of the blade. The metal is 3/8" thick, and is hardened. Never tried bending hardened damascus steel before. Is this possible to do it cold without it breaking or do I have to soften it up, bend it true and re-harden it? thanks |

Are you sure it's hardened? That seems like a pretty thick piece to come pre hardened. Does a file cut into it?

From ebay you say? If I were you I'd chuck it and order something from www.knifekits.com or www.texasknife.com.

I have looked through those sites before going on ebay, I am on a tight budget, trying to make some nice gifts for my brothers.
the buyer describes the blank as being heat treated to 52/56 RC so that's why I figured it was hardened already. here is an image of the blank from the handle to the blade. I'd like to simply tap it out with a hammer until its straight, although I have never tried this with damascus steel, or hardened steel. |

If its pre-hardned , you will not straighten it out.
You would have to normalize then straighten and then re-harden. If you wanted to drill any more holes in the tang , now would be the time to do it while its soft. __________________ American Bladesmiths Society Apprentice Smith Work Smarter Not Harder www.OliverKnives.com |

Hmm I wouldn't try hammering it straight or you definatly could bust it. This is a blade blank? Already cut to the shape and has bevels ground in it? If that's the case you might have some luck if you use a small torch and draw the temper from the spine of the knife. Heat the spine and watch the colors run down towards the edge but don't let them get to close to the edge or you will ruin the knife. Once the spine has been softened you might be able to bend it back to shape.
Do a search on straightning a warped blade after heat treat. There are some good tips out there. Be careful and make sure you wear gloves and eye protection in case it snaps. Last edited by metal99; 10-26-2012 at 09:18 AM. |
