... when (the one day you forgot your pocket knife because you were already running late) after you respond no, to the question "Does anyone have a knife?", everyone looks at you and says, "Are you kidding me? You don't have a knife on you?"

...when you borrow your wife's PED-EGG foot scraper to take care of those pesky calluses acquired while grinding...

No matter how many bins and drawers of handle material on have, you still look to see what's available on the websites for every knife.

I agree completely with Ed regarding the Drill Doctor, I spent many years free hand sharpening and as good as I got I could make it cut like new but the point was never completely centered and if only off by a hair the bit would cut a slightly larger hole than it should have. This larger hole would affect my finale fit and finish especially in pin fit. I love my Drill Doctor!

Is there a Drill Doctor for the tiny bits. I very rarely use anything larger than 1/8" and it would be nice to sharpen the little guys.

You know you are a knife maker when you cut or hurt yourself and you walk into the house and want your wife to take a pic of it so you can post it and you have a huge smile on your face the whole time. You know you have done it.

Don't forget to stir a little glitter into the resin first. Every duct taper needs its bling!

You know you are a knife maker when.... you go to change a flat on the ol' truck and you use chunks of ironwood in log form to chock the other 3 wheels.

My husband didn't get it, I tried to explain that those little shinny circles on the handle are suppose to go all the way through to hold the handle on. THERE NOT SUPPOSE TO BE PAINTED ON. I couldn't seem to make him care. The steaks were good.

I'm ok at sharpening the small bits..down to #71 (I used to drill lots of tiny holes for a previous business) but once I get to around 1/8" I just can't keep angles that work right.

I really wish it did 1" holes... nowadays the majority of the bits I use are in the 1/8"-3/8" size but then I have one 1" drill I use on a regular basis and I can't sharpen it worth a darn. I've been having a local machine shop do it for me.

And yup I agree, cobalt or better is the way to go. When I first switched from hss to cobalt/carbide it was like the heavens parting and hearing angels singing.
A good trick i use is to scribe your preferred angle onto your grinder rest. It works really well for me.. i actually look forward to sharpening my drills because i know how nice they drill afterwards!
