steel bolsters
For my next folder I want to have mirror polished steel bolsters. Optimally, that would be stainless steel, but I only have 1/4" thick 416 so I would have to grind it down alot to get it thin enough to use. I do have 1/8" O1. Will rust be a problem if I use the O1? Also, for the future, can anyone tell me where I can order 1/8" thick 400 series stainless steel?

Rust is always a problem with O-1. 416 SS is a better choice and any of the knife suppliers; K&G, Sheffields, Alpha Supply, Tru Grit, ect... carry it in 1/8". Refer to Don Robinson's tutorial on spot welding them to the liners. Wealth of info there

Of course rust is always a potential problem for non-stainless carbon steels. Heck, even "stainless" steels are not completely immune to potential rust problems. That being said, if you properly maintain your knife and keep it cleaned and oiled, you can use whatever steel you want for blades, bolsters, or anything else.
That being said, 1/8" SS barstock is pretty cheap, so you may as well make maintenance that much easier on yourself. Most major knife suppliers should carry 1/8" 416 (or similar) SS barstock. You can also gun blue the bolsters for a nice effect. Still will need maintained just like any other non stainless steel, but does look cool on a pocket knife
