question on Liner Lock, pivot pin fitting????
Ok Warning this is a lengthy question. I've made a few liner locks up to this point and am wondering about how everyone else goes about determining the length to make the pivot pin. I'm using the 3/16 in diamater pivot pins. In the past I've been giving myself .012 to .016 in crush between the end of the pivot pin, and the pivot pin screw by removing one teflon washer from one side of the blade, putting the liner back on, screwing it down and grinding the pivot pin flush. Then i'd just remove the liner again deburr pivot pin, reinstall the teflon washer and screw the screw back into the pivot pin, and go on to whatever the next step is in the construction. How is everyone else doing this and why do you like the way you do it ???? 8o

I've been doing it basically the same way you are, only I don't grinde, I hand sand with 220 grit on my granit slab. It's been working for me, and I've made about 7 folders so far.

The distance between the outside of the liners at the pivot should be the same as the distance between the liners at any point behind which should be the same all along the folder. So if you measure the distance and then cut the pivot to this length, wouldn't that be an easier way to go and wouldn't this width be correct? Now if the pivot screws don't bottom correctly because the screw is not threaded all the way or undercut right up to the screw head, you may have to then remove a touch more. By the way, every time you tighten down on those teflon washers they will compact. The blade will then have play side to side when you open the blade and hold the locking part of the liner to the side. I just don't see how teflon can be used in folders. Nylatron, in my opinion, is a superior product for liner lock use but phosfor bronz, brass and stainless steel work okay as well. Frank
