homegrown damascus dagger - again
I've been at this one since before Christmas. Just way too much work these days - why does work have to interfere with my playtime all the time? - I seem to gravitate toward making daggers these days. Something very satisfying about making old looking knives. I do appreciate all the slick modern designs, but I still like traditional / historical knife designs most. This is my own "twisted" can-welded damascus of W1 rods, 1095 and nickel. The grip is Purple Heart, the guard is forged from mild steel, the pommel and ferrule turned and filed. 6 inch blade, 10 3/4 LOA. Hope you like it. Thanks for looking!

Yeah, I don't like it much either. I was thinking of making nail files or exacto knives.
Thanks, Carl. I hope to be more "productive" this year - my New Years' resolution.. __________________ Chris K. Two Mountains Forge Delta, BC, Canada www.twomountainsforge.com |

Very nice. What's with the tip of the blade? Is the cloth covering it or did you go for something non-daggerish?

I was wondering the tip as well when I saw it last night...
Beautiful blade nonetheless ! Love the guard! ~Nate |

Could be the world's first clip point dagger-bowie. Daggers are probably the most difficult knife to make but Chris did very well ...

Thanks, guys. The tip was entirely done like this on purpose. As I was forging the blade I noticed a bit of a concave curve on one side, which I could have forged out but I liked it, so I left it in and even worked it in more to make it more obvious. You can't see from the picture but it's actually a hollow grind. The edge was a bit tricky inside the curve, but I managed to get it even. I made four different guards for it, each not doing the piece justice (cross bar, diamond, double lightning bolt ARRGH!). They were all too angular and sharp, and with the curve in the tip - like a lock of hair - I wantend something curvey to pick up on the lines in the damascus and in the tip. Same with the grip. I wanted to keep that wavey, curly thing going.
Speaking of curvey, Rob, I like your - um - assistant. She can chop my parsley anytime... __________________ Chris K. Two Mountains Forge Delta, BC, Canada www.twomountainsforge.com |

I really like that Damascus a lot. I've always liked patterns with bolder, more open lines. The wispy, mild contrast in yours is unique and awesome.

Thanks, CB. It's an on-going experiment - size of rods to use, orientation, degree of twist, etc. This one was 3/16 rods with a 360 degree twist.
