Drill jig thingy for scales that aren't flat kinda

When drilling pin holes in scale material that isn't flat, it's hard to get the hole in the scales straight. Here's one answer. Using a 3" square pipe I notched out an inch or so for clearance. I made sure it was flat inside the pipe where the knife tang gets clamped and it's square enough to the drill press to be good enough.

Here the tang and scale is clamped in place and ready to drill through the extra holes along the top. For years I was struggling to use this same piece of pipe with no notch and clamping the knife length wise in the pipe. This was always an excercise in frustration until this solution came to me a couple of nights ago.

I bet there are dozens of other solutions out there for this, all better than mine but if you are me, you do the best you can with what you got...And that's all I have to say about that...

how about one of those small 2" engineer squares? I use one to adjust my bandsaw table. could just put it on and adjust the angle accordingly.

Tracy,
A good idea.
I'd watch it when going all the way througn the scales to minimize it breaking out.
Maybe a back-up block of wood?
Then there's tapered tangs. Just add a shim on one end till it looks good?

What I use isn't too different than what you do Tracy. I have a piece of 3/16" X 3"X 3 1/2" bar stock with a window hole about 3/4" square in the center of the 3" but about 1/2" from one end. I place this over my drill vise opened say 1 1/4". Lots of holes needed to be done in liner locking folders. Frank
