Field mice move around under the snow in winter, usually in the grass just below the snow but they can tunnel through the snow when they need to. You rarely get to see these tunnels because they are buried in the snow but due to some rapid freezing followed by some rain the snow got frozen into ice and then exposed when the outer snow was washed away.
