In the past I've used Scotchbrite pads, steel wool, WD-40 and elbow grease, wire wheels, and even Muratic acid. The latter was on a HUGE 20' SS sculpture the school had used carbon wire wheels to texture for aesthetics instead of investing in SS wire wheels, the rust just blossomed in the scratches. BTW, I don't like using Muratic at all!
Guys on the Shopsmith Forum use a variety of methods to remove rust from the lift/way tubes including electrolysis.
I have no trouble paste waxing or LPS3'ing everything but in MI. as I'm sure it is in a lot of other high humidity regions if you let it get away from you, there is a lot more work involved in catching up with it.
I'm excited to see what it can do.
