Yes. To bring the pattern out knifemakers and manufacturers will use an acid to bring the pattern out. Depending how strong the solution relative to exposure will determine how deep of an etch will be on the Damascus. So yes, there may be felt ridges in the Damascus.
Some processes of discoloring the metal may visually appear as a "damascus" but it may not.
