I've seen plenty of these grinders made from aluminum most of them in the 1/4-3/8" thickness range for the plates and tubing. If I was to go with aluminum I would use fender washers for better stress distribution. But that's just me. Wish I would have made mine from aluminum. But had 3/8 steel I got for free. So, away I went.

Just looked through the plans. 3/8" should suffice. Could use 1/2" for base plate and motor mount plate if you wanted but I don't believe it necessary. But it would help rigidity.
