The handle material I used on the video knives was cut from chunks of ironwood.....I knew there wouldn't be enough for other handles.....so in this case I erred on the side of leaving them overly thick... one one particular, there was a big knot in the ironwood that I wanted to keep......and the best way to do that was leave the material overly thick....then grind down to the knot. None of the material was more then 3/8" thick....but because the knives are small, it makes the handles look terribly thick.
