Unless it's been stabilized, I don't consider buckeye burl suitable for knife handles. No matter what you do with/to it, it's going to contain voids, and be soft in some spots, "punky" in others, and will cause you more frustration than anything.
Some will say that there are a number of things you can do to "make it work", but I'm not one of them....when it comes to natural burls, once you've used them stabilized, nothing else will do.
